Art project ‘ Liberty is in the Eye of the Beholder’ A collaboration with: Mark van Enk, Gina Draaisma. This time we translated the national, somewhat dull May 5 theme ‘Freedom, a fundamental right and safety’ into a large and universal image: the Statue of Liberty!
Who owns freedom, who holds freedom and who takes freedom (from someone else). Thus, freedom is not something unambiguous.
‘Ones freedom is another man’s burden’.
Our ‘Lady Liberty’ was blindfolded, that way she, like Lady Justice, would be blind and judge without regard and weigh, consider and weigh her arguments carefully.
The sculpture was carved from foam sheets and supported on a wooden frame. She was placed in Park Wezenlanden in the water, where quite suggestively only her chest and head remain just above the water level, is the symbol of freedom drowning?
Liberty was enhanced by Michel van Bulk’s artwork ‘Schimmen’. Art project Liberty is In the Eye Of The Beholder (sinking Miss liberty). Liberation Festival 2007- Wezenlandenpark, Zwolle
