ArtflowZwolle – kunstroute – van 21-05 tot 04-09 2022

Art Flow Zwolle is een expositie van internationale en Zwolse kunstenaars. Hun werk is te zien op verschillende locaties in de stad die samen een bijzondere kunstroute vormen.

Art Flow Zwolle is an exhibition of international and Zwolle-based artists. Their work can be seen at various locations in the city, which together form a special art route.

PROTO– Zwolle – Art & Design expo – van 24-05 t/m 10-06 2022

Een zestiendaags Art & Design event waarin getalenteerde afstuderende mbo- en hbo-studenten en professionals in de kunst en vormgeving hun werk laten zien. Ruim 2 weken lang en verspreid over verschillende locaties in Zwolle zijn er tentoonstellingen, workshops, lezingen en andere festiviteiten.

In de Stadkamer, Zwolle zijn twee werken van mij te zien.:

1- (installatie) Remains Of Today: Mijn audio video experience (geïnspireerd op de eerste 10 kunstwerken) ‘ Remains Of Today’ met muzikale composities van Ali Reza Tahoeni is te zien in de Stadkamer. De eerste publicatie van Remains Of Today met de eerste 100 werken , Remains Of Today vol 01 ligt daar ook ter inzage.

2-Escalator: acryl op canvas 2021, uit de serie Brave New World

PROTO– Zwolle – Art & Design expo – from 24-05 till 10-06 2022

A 16-day Art & Design event in which talented graduating MBO and HBO students and art and design professionals show their work. For over two weeks, spread over different locations in Zwolle, there are exhibitions, workshops, lectures and other festivities.

Two of my works are on display in the Stadkamer in Zwolle:

1- (installation) Remains Of Today: My audio video experience (inspired by the first 10 artworks) ‘Remains Of Today’ with musical compositions by Ali Reza Tahoeni is on show in the Stadkamer. The first publication of Remains Of Today with the first 100 works, Remains Of Today vol 01 is also available there for viewing.

2-Escalator:: acryl op canvas 2021, uit de serie Brave New World

NEL – Amsterdam – Kunst & design – tot najaar 2022

Met Nel, Duurzaam design uit Amsterdam Noord heb ik een bijzondere samenwerking. Elk half jaar hang ik een nieuw werk bij hem in de winkel. Nel (Jorrit Tol) staat voor de zelfde waarden als waar ik als kunstenaar voor sta. Duurzaamheid gecombineerd met schoonheid is 1+ 1= 3.

Deze periode hangt een van mijn laatste werken : Underground bij Jorrit in de showroom.

NEL – Amsterdam – Kunst & design – till autumn 2022

I have a special collaboration with Nel, Sustainable Design, from Amsterdam- North. Every six months I exhibit a new work in his studio. Nel (Jorrit Tol) represents the same values as I stand for as an artist. Sustainability combined with aesthetics is 1+ 1= 3.

Sweat shopping

Locatie: Galerie de Ploegh

8 kunstenaars ontfermen zich over het fenomeen Sweatshop, en hedendaagse uitbuiting.

Een oordeel over het verleden is makkelijk gemaakt want daar maakten we zelf geen deel van uit. We bediscussiëren en verexcuseren ons voor de daden van onze verre voorouders of vragen erkenning en excuses, afhankelijk vanuit welke achtergrond je tegen het verleden aankijkt.

Uitbuiting, exploitatie, kinderarbeid en slavernij, het past niet meer bij een moderne samenleving. Of hebben we het een ander gezicht gegeven?

Inconvienient: Voor deze expositie heb ik een werk een werk uit 2015: Inconvienient (Slave) aangevuld met het werk Sale. Sale is een kopie van Slave maar zijn de letters herschikt tot het woord Sale. Het is nu dus een tweeluik die onder de zelfde naam Inconvienient (02) schuil gaat.

Sweat shopping

8 artists examine the phenomenon of sweatshops and contemporary exploitation.

It is easy to judge the past as we were not part of it. We discuss and apologize for the deeds of our distant ancestors or ask for recognition and apologies, all depending on how we perceive the past.

Exploitation, child labour and slavery, it no longer fits in a modern society. Or did we give it another appearance?

Inconvienient:: For this exhibition, I have supplemented a work from 2015: Inconvienient Slave) with the work Sale. Sale is a copy of Slave, but the letters have been rearranged to form the word Sale. So now it’s a diptych that can be seen under the same name; Inconvienient (02)

‘Rituelen’

Locatie: Rietveldpaviljoen

30 kunstenaars laten kunstwerken zien waarin rituelen – hedendaags, fictief of verdwijnend – centraal staan. Dit omdat rituelen veel over mensen vertellen, over onze angsten, verlangens en sociale verbanden.

In de westerse wereld zijn bijvoorbeeld de kerkelijke rituelen een veel kleinere rol in de samenleving in gaan nemen. Rituelen verdwijnen dus maar er komen ook veel nieuwe rituelen terug. Rituelen kunnen spiritueel, verbindend, helend zijn, maar ook dagelijks, persoonlijk of collectief. Ook de komst van internet heeft bijgedragen aan nieuwe rituelen.

Dedicated Follower:

Ik heb deze video speciaal gemaakt voor de thema expositie, Rituelen, die najaar 2022 plaats gaat vinden in Het Rietveldpaviljoen te Amersfoort. Deze video zal het centerpiece worden van een grotere installatie.

Rituelen zijn er in alle maten en vormen. Als kunstenaar vind ik het interessant om sociale fenomenen te ontleden en te ontdoen van hun algemeen maatschappelijke aanvaarding en ze te beoordelen op hun werkelijke merites. Het fenomeen ‘volgen’ en de rituelen waarmee volgen omgeven is heb ik vervolgens eens kritisch onder de loep genomen.

‘Rituelen’

30 artists display artworks in which rituals – contemporary, fictional or vanishing – are the key element. This is because rituals tell us a great deal about people, our fears, desires and social relationships.

In the Western world, for instance, church rituals have become a less significant part of society. Consequently connecting rituals are disappearing, yet many new rites are emerging as well. Rituals can be spiritual, unifying, and healing, but also daily, personal or communal. The arrival of the Internet has also contributed to new rituals.

Dedicated Follower:

I made this video especially for the theme exhibition, Rituals, which will take place in the Rietveld Pavilion in Amersfoort in the autumn of 2022. This video will be the centerpiece of a larger installation.

Rituals come in all shapes and sizes. Being an artist, I find it interesting to dissect social phenomena, to strip them of their general social acceptance and to judge them on their real merits. I then took a critical look at the phenomenon of ‘following’ and the rituals that accompany it.

About this video.

I’ve made this video especially for the theme exhibition  Rituals (Rituelen), which will take place in the autumn of 2022 at the Rietveldpaviljoen, Amersfoort. It will be a centrepiece of a larger installation.

Many human customs are encapsulated with rituals. I took a close and critical look at the rituals concerning the phenomenon of “following “. As an artist I am interested in decomposing social phenomenon’s, strip it from its general social acceptance and examine it on it’s true merits.

Because of the sensitive content of the video it could easily be misread or misinterpret. This is why I wrote this supporting letter. To explain my underlying motives to you! It feels kind of vulnerable to share the video with youThe reason to publish it ahead of the exhibition is to examine the sentiments it arouses and if the message I want to send comes across the way I hope.

So here goes:

The difference between following and following– I feel more or less obliged to clarify what I mean by following within this context, because we more or less all follow and imitate, constantly, consciously, unconsciously and since the dawn of time.

I make the distinction between critical following and blind following. The following I am referring to in my video is blind and fanatic. In the blind variety the critical ability kind of disappears and dedication and fanaticism gradually increases. A fanatical follower more or less surrenders his uniqueness and literally hands over his individuality and power. What consequences this may have thereafter depends entirely on the followed, to whom this authority is granted to. Passionate following sounds fairly harmless, but is it really?

To follow, anno now, anno the past, anno the future – Following, anno now, is something that literally engages masses of people on all kinds of different levels. Because it has an enormous social, commercial and economic impact, it raises the question to what extent we are slowly losing our autonomy en masse and what possible consequences are still in store for us. How will we look back on this in the future or is the future a more extreme continuation of what we are experiencing today?

Disclaimer (wrote on 09-02-2022) Although I wanted to take this topic of ‘following’ to the cutting edge I had not foreseen that YouTube would remove my content on the grounds of Hate Speech. This was as shocking as it was interesting because, obviously, the content was not considered in depth. They’ve been upset over some historical images that easily can be used in the actual hate speech industry. In my defence; a kitchen knife can be a murder weapon in the hands of murderer but in the hands of a cook it’s a useful and much needed tool……………

…………….I do hope to make the viewer reflect as I try to peel off the innocence of the word follow.

Social acceptance and adaptation – So, in conclusion, we all like to follow. Following as an activity has undergone a transformation in the 21st century; it has now become a more abstract, elusive, extensive, and diffuse concept. It is currently unclear if and what consequences are tied to contemporary online following. Although I have this premonition that those consequences will be there, and that it will unfold very gradually and quietly. Nevertheless, as it has now turned into a widely accepted phenomenon, there is little to no resistance in society; it seems as natural as the sun emerging daily.

Meanwhile, a major social shift is taking place that is actually eluding our perception because, to a greater or lesser extent, we are all currently part of it. Whether the outcome is positive or negative, it seems to become an irreversible process; the system wherein it operates is too big as it is. Morals, norms, values, outlook on the world, fashion, trends, politics, geopolitics and even the perception of nature, everything is influenced and colored by this faceless system.

Having supporters or being supporter is now an important measure of popularity, especially for young people – it confirms a right to exist. In a strange way, it provides some kind of online communal sense, only this particular community is in addition to being powerful, rather superficial, infinite, and fickle and thrives on the delusion of the moment.

Following and peer group dynamics versus autonomy – There appears to be more polarization and divergence today than there was a few decades ago. We have all come to live in our own confirmation bubble and are increasingly less understanding of the other side. We feel safe and empowered within our group or bubble, we are known and recognized there. Decreasing tolerance and resentment of other groups is possibly a secondary effect here. Therefore, with this video I would like to make a stand for, autonomy and independent living and thinking.
