W.I.P. (Work in progress) – Searching for balance

installation 2025
Acrylic, stain, PVC pipe, MDF, wood, screws, rope and sunflower seeds.
4 metres long x 42cm wide x 2 metres high |

The installation W.I.P., depicts a fragile balance between individual and community. Inspired by Da Vinci’s Vitruvius Man, but in conflict – wavering, searching.

On the W.I.P. are the words I, WE, THEY. These words seem unconnected but they become communicating vessels as soon as something of weight is attached to them.

Sow, an assignment for the visitor, : In front of the W.I.P. you will find a bag of sunflower seeds. Take some seeds and place them somewhere on the seesaw, in a spot, by the word, that intuitively suits you the most.

Your choice affects the balance. Where do you place yourself?

Harvesting: The seeds will be harvested daily and the day’s produce will disappear into bags bearing the same name as the place where they were found; I, WE, THEY. After a period of six weeks, the contents of those bags, the weight of the words, will be carefully weighed.

Expositie: Wankel Evenwicht

This installation was created especially for the Exhibition Wankel Evenwicht (Delicate Equilibrium (Academiehuis Zwolle 04-2025).

This exhibition is a special exploration of the social theme: ‘How can we live together’ in a time of change and shows the result of a unique collaboration between six Zwolle artists, designers and the community. In this exhibition, you will see the result of this with work and a project by: Everdien Post, Marian Visscher – Benjamins, Jan Pieter Gootjes, Jolan Van de Waeter and Ludie Klamer Gootjes and myself.

In the preliminary process of several months, we were assisted in our research by students from ArtEZ University of the Arts and Cibap Next. In this, Marian Dorothe Visscher and I had a pleasant collaboration with Ebe Damen, Artez social design student. This under the encouragement and coaching of Tabo Goudswaard, Jeanine van Dalen, Heidie van den Brink. And special thanks to Lisa Heethaar for her good support.

Thanks to Creative Works and Cibap Next with the social innovation programme and the programme Art in the High Choir of the Academiehuis Grote Kerk Zwolle.
