Red White District – Is verbal no. 40

Collage: Gevonden afzetlint, verf en  tekst op kussensloop op een houten frame.

De titel klinkt als een persoon met een spraakgebrek. De rood witte afzetlint, verlengd met strepen rode verf, scheidt de rode van de witte. En dat klinkt dan weer naar een segregatie van witten en roden. Niets van het bovenstaande is hier aan de hand. Een toevallige samenloop van per ongeluk gecombineerde materialen leidt naar het Red White District, waar in tegenstelling tot hoe het klinkt, nooit iets gebeurd.

De straten van Zwolle zijn eerst blootgesteld aan deze plastic tas voordat deze zak werd blootgesteld aan u. Dit is het tijdperk van de ‘exposure’. Zonder exposure geen aanwezigheid, zonder aanwezigheid geen exposure. Maar wat als alles en iedereen al over exposed is???

Dit tijdperk zal de boeken ingaan als het tijdperk van de energie vraagstukken. We hebben er meer dan genoeg. 

De oplossing dient zich al aan in het woord Power plant. Empower de plant.

Could Question Mark- verbal no. 37- UFO 9

Gevonden plastic zwart object in de vorm van een vraagteken, een rond metalen object en acryl verf op canvas op een houten frame.

Deze objecten zijn gevonden in de buurt van mijn atelier, Rieteweg 10, Zwolle. Ze zijn waarschijnlijk een te veel aan iets, ongewenst geworden en is nu ineens opgewaardeerd tot een-her gedefinieerd- kunstwerk.

Moon in Scorpio – Verbal 36 / UFO 8

Ik heb de titel Moon In Scorpio gestolen van een titeltrack van de band Family Stand. Op hun beurt hebben zij het weer gestolen van de kosmos. Denk aan het Schorpioenen sterrenbeeld, als de maan in Schorpioen staat. Hoe kan zoiets kosmopolitisch nu zo plastic en aards worden? We zijn allemaal sterrenstof, as tot as en stof tot stof, wat omhoog gaat moet neer gaan en zo verder…behalve voor plastic. Wanneer wij er allang niet meer zijn kruipt, hangt, ligt  mijn Scorpio nog steeds rond. Plastic troep wil kunst zijn en onsterfelijk worden. En het zal daarin slagen.

Een mooi Engels gezegde om te zeggen dat je wel belangrijker zaken aan je hoofd hebt dan hetgeen voor ligt. Het suggereert ook dat die zeker opgelost gaan worden (bigger fish needs frying), of is het juist gebrek aan interesse voor de kleine visjes….

On Top – Verbal 34

In een prestatiemaatschappij wil iedereen aan de top staan. Zelfs als dat betekent dat je vandaar alleen nog maar omlaag kunt gaan.

Vreemde zwarte objecten gebruikt zijn en of eerder hebben vastgezeten aan iets groters. Plaats het in een streng zwart vierkant en plotseling staat het voor iets waar iets veilig bewaard kan worden.

De Art zone is een denkbeeldige zone waar of waarin kunst serieus genomen wordt. Wensdenken? Een eventuele waarde van een art zone is in the Eye of the beholder .

Eerder maakte ik The Nose have It een van de eerste verbals uit deze serie. Zoals de zin The Nose Have It mij, bijwijze van inval, als woordgrap verraste als een vrolijke inval. Lag The Eyes Have It al in de lijn van deze gedachte. Desalniettemin een lichte en vrolijke  manier van naar een trieste ontwikkeling kijken, de Brexit.

Vanwege de combinatie van het word ‘disinfected’ (ontsmet) en de herhalende verticale strepen is de associatie van onderdrukkende politiek en een gevangenis nooit ver weg.

In elk systeem kunnen ongewenste gedachten gedesinfecteerd worden om verschillende redenen. Complexe situaties vragen om complexe antwoorden. Het is een ingewikkelde wereld, vindt je niet?

Your No Thing is no.29 van de verbal serie. Spelen met de betekenis van het woord nothing. Wie weet is het woord oorspronkelijk wel afkomstig van no thing. Waar uit spreekt dat we dingen slechter behandelen dan elkaar. In een wereld van winnaars en verliezers is ongezien, en ongehoord zijn, niets zijn misschien wel het ergste wat kan de moderne mens kan overkomen. Of is het juist vrijheid?

Who’s afraid Of Red– Verbal no 28 -UFO no. 4

Een rode ‘lint’ geplaatst in het midden van een geel vierkant- gebruikmakend van twee van de 3 primaire kleuren.  Een beetje Newman flavour in de titel en een nieuw kunstwerkje is geboren. Deze titel geleende laat me nadenken over het originele Who’s Afraid’ . In een ogenschijnlijk simpel kunstwerk waar uitsluitend kleur en vorm gebruikt is en  waaraan geen direct vakmanschap of traditie is af te lezen is maakt het kijken verwarrend. Het originele Who’s afraid… heeft nog al stof doen opwaaien. In dit geval is dat niet aan de hand. Het is wat het is en eerlijk gezegd heb ik geen idee wat het rode object is of was. Het lag op de straat zonder duidelijke reden. Het enige wat ik weet is dat de eigenaar er geen behoefte meer aan had en dat ik er iets moois in zag. Dat is waarom dit UFO no.4 is.

Draw The Line, de 41e verbal

Verbal ‘ Draw The Line is no. 41 from the verbal/ufo series. De series will be completed at no.50.

Red White District– verbal no.40. 

Collage: found barrier line, paint and text on a pillow cover on a wooden frame.

The title sounds like a person with a speech impediment. The red-white barrier line, prolonged by stripes of red paint, separates the reds from the whites. That sounds like segregation of reds and whites. None of the above is at hand here. A coincidental converge of accidental combined materials is leading to the Red White District, where, in contrary of its tone, nothing ever happens.

ExpoSure – verbal no 39-

This is the age of exposure, without exposure there’s no presence. Without presence there’s no exposure. What if everything and everyone is already over exposed……

Power plant – Verbal no 38- UFO 10

Collage: found part of electric device and plastic flower-like object on wrapping-foil and a wooden frame.

This era will be booked as the era of the energy issues.  We’ve got quite a few.

On hand the supplies for our growing energy needs and on the other hand the residues that pollute our soil and poison the air we breathe

The solution is already present in the word Power plant. Empower the plant. 

These object are found in the area round my atelier@ Rieteweg 10, Zwolle. It probably surpluses something else, became unwanted and went astray, is now winding up as a re-identified – artwork. 

Could Question Mark- verbal no. 37- UFO 9

Moon in Scorpio – Verbal 36 / UFO 8

College: found plastic, black object (ripped sock-holder size 34>46) and  white acrylic paint on canvas and a wooden frame.

I stole the title Moon In Scorpio from a song by the band Family Stand. They, before me, took it from the cosmos. The Scorpio constellation, when the moon was in Scorpio. How can something so cosmic becomes so earthly? We are all stardust; ashes to ashes, dust to dust, what comes up must go down and so on.  When we are long gone my Scorpio will still crawl (lingers) around. This piece of plastic trash, becoming art and all, desires to be immortal and will succeed.

Bigger Fish To Fry – Verbal 35 / UFO 7

A beautiful expression that states you are having other and bigger issues than the one present at the time. It also suggests some determinate solving of that same issue (bigger fish needs frying) or just a lack of interest in the smaller fish……..

On Top – Verbal 34

In a prestige society everyone wants to be on top. Even when it means you can only go down from there.

Vault- Verbal no 33/ UFO 06

Collage: black unidentified found objects and acrylic paint on canvas on a wooden frame.

Strange black objects used and or attached to something bigger before. Put it in a rigid black square and it suddenly represents the safekeeping of something. Like it says; Keep your precious things safe, put it in a vault and get rid of the cheep and used stuff or even waste it on the streets.

Arty zone- verbal no. 32

The arty zone is an imaginary zone where in or where at art is taken seriously. Wishful thinking? The potential value of an arty zone is in the eye of the beholder. 

The Eyes Have It – verbal no 31

Collage: found characters and images of eyes from newspapers and a plastic bag on a prepped cotton T-shirt on a wooden frame

Earlier in this series I made The Nose have It. If the nose has it, the eyes must have it too. The sentence  ‘ The Nose Have It’ kindof got me by surprise, like a sudden cheerful epiphany. The Eyes Have is more of a logical follow up, as it was already in line with the previous. Nevertheless, it is a light and cheerful way of looking at a sad thing, the break up with the UK, the Brexit. 

Only Political Verbal no. 30 / UFO 05

Collage: found carton box, seal ribbon and a  plastic hotel toilet seat seal on a wooden frame.

 The combination of the word ‘disinfected’ and the repeating vertical stripes calls for an association with oppressing politics and a prison bars.

In any system, unwanted thoughts can be disinfected for several reasons. One argument here could be that complex situations require complex measures. And needless to say that it is a complex world……..

Your No- Thing/Nothing-Verbal no.29.

I started playing with the meaning of the word nothing. Maybe the word nothing is even rooted in the expression your no thing. Probably we treat things and objects worse than each other. In a world of winners and losers, being unheard and unseen, being nothing is probably the worst that can happen to modern men. But it also could be more close to absolute freedom?

Who’s afraid Of..- UFO no. 4.

Collage: found red tie-wrap like plastic object and yellow textile paint on semi transparent cotton on a wooden frame

A red ribbon placed in the centre of a yellow square – using two of the 3 primary colours, add a little Newman flavour to the title and new artwork is born. Using this title makes me much aware of the original ‘ Who’s afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue. This artwork created a dispute on the issue of what true art supposed to be. Especially when it seemed restored with just a paint roller in primary colours. My interpretation of this situation would be something like this; to use basically just colour and shape without any ‘ dressing up’ is confusing for most people.  As we are all conditioned that everything should have meaning or at least relatable craftsmanship mixed with some traceable blood, sweat and tears. This is not the case with modern abstract art; it’s art for art’s sake.

As for this small artwork, it is what it is.  It has no pretences. Frankly, I do not know what the red ribbon is or was. Just found it on the street with no particular purpose to be there. The only thing we know is that the owner got bored of it.
