Ik Besef Dat Ik (N)iets Weet verbal  141

Roze plastic tas, van De Bibliotheek, met een Einstein quote, aan mij gegeven door  atelier genoot Corine Aalvanger, tape, een reflector en witte acryl verf op een houten frame.

Het is best ironisch dat zo’n grote geest als Albert Einstein zegt dat hoe meer hij weet, hoe meer hij zich eigenlijk realiseert dat hij niets weet. De woorden van een wijze man. 

Als we dit door een hedendaagse bril bekijken zien we dat kwaliteit, matige kwaliteit, feitelijke en fictieve informatie onze systemen en geest overspoelen.

Maar worden we er wijzer van? Ik zou zeggen van niet. We zijn niet in staat zo’n overvloed van oppervlakkige, van alles wat, kletspraat en belangrijke informatie te verteren op een 24/7 basis en ook nog eens diepte inzichten verkrijgen. Heel simpel, het is te veel, en afgezien van een paar soundbites, blijft het niet hangen. Intelligentie stelt je in staat om abstract en volgens een bepaalde logica te denken. Het is de kunst van weten hoe te interpreteren en hoe informatie te gebruiken waarmee je uiteindelijk kennis vergaard. Volgens Einstein zou echte kennis je nederig stemmen. Als hij vandaag geleefd zou hebben zouden zijn woorden dan zoiets als dit hebben geklonken?: “He-man, Ik heb ook een mening maar om eerlijk te zijn, wat weet ik nou eigenlijk.

It’s ironic that a great mind as Albert Einstein states that the more he actually knows, the more he realizes that he actually knows nothing. These are indeed words of a wise man. If we review this in a contemporary way we see quality and poor quality, true and false information are flooding our systems and minds. But do we really become any wiser? I would say, not. We are not capable of digesting an abundance of shallow, miscellaneous, chitchat and important information on a 24/7 basis and get in-depth insights at the same time. It’s simple, if it’s too much. Except for a few sound bites, it won’t stick. Intelligence enables us to think in abstractions according to certain logic. It is the art of knowing how to interpret and use information. This is how knowledge is obtained. According to Einstein, real knowledge makes humble. If he would still be alive today, could his words sound something like this?: “He-man, I do have an opinion too but to be honest, what do I really know”.

De Heilige Koe en het Stalen Ros (verbal 142)

Gevonden gebroken plastic wiel velg, geknipte tekst en afbeelding uit oude krant van Lady Liberty haar neus dicht knijpend tegen de stank, op/in een houten frame. 

Dit is hoe ik nooit mijn rijbewijs haalde. Toen ik nog geen 18 was kwamen mijn ouders met een deal die de meeste tieners niet kunnen weerstaan, De deal was simpel, niet roken voor je 18^e!. Het was mijn eerlijke intentie om niet te roken maar ik bleek slecht gemotiveerd. Om te illustreren; het begon met een stage bij een Amsterdams modellen bureau. Deze gelegenheid plaatste me voor de ultieme test.  De asbakken daar waren tot en over de nok gevuld en op een dagelijkse basis ik kreeg vaak een sigaret aangeboden om wille van diverse sociale redenen.  In eerste instantie nam ik er wel eentje uit beleefdheid maar later kon ik het al niet meer weerstaan. Ik was 17 en besloot mijn nieuwe hobby eerlijk op te biechten, wetende dat dit dure cadeau op het spel stond. De consequentie; geen rijbewijs voor Marit.  Een opmerkelijk ding kwam hierdoor wel aan het licht, Ik vond het helemaal niet erg. Tot nu toe ben ik altijd rijbewijs en autoloos geweest en eerlijk het maakt mij geen bal uit. In een wereld waarin de auto de dubieuze status van de Heilige Koe heeft verkregen ben ik nog altijd blij met mijn oude niet- elektrische- Stalen Ros. Daarnaast rook ik al een poosje niet meer en ben dus zeer up to date met mijn zero uitstoot!

The Holy Cow and the Steel Steed. (verbal 142)

This is how I never got my drivers licence. When I was still 18 minus, my parents offered me a deal most youngsters cannot resist. The deal was simple; do not smoke before your 18th birthday. 

It was my honest intention to not smoke but I seemed ill motivated. For one, I started an internship at a model agency in Amsterdam; this event really put me to the test. The ashtrays were piled up high on a daily basis and I was frequently offered a smoke for all kinds of social reasons. At first I did it out of politeness, but then I could not resist. I was 17 and boldly decided to come clear to my parents about this new habit, knowing this expensive gift was at stake. The consequence of this confession was, ‘no drivers licence’ for Marit. A remarkable thing came to light, I did not mind at all!! Up to now I remained driver-licenced and car-less and frankly, I couldn’t care less. In a world where the car reached the dubious status of a Holy Cow I hold on steady to my old Steel Steed instead. Besides, I also quit smoking, so I’m truly up to date with this zero emission thing going!

We zijn allemaal niet veel of ver weg geweest het afgelopen jaar. Covid hield ons dicht bij huis.  Dit zou weleens de perfecte gelegenheid kunnen zijn ongebaande paden in je huis en je hoofd te ontdekken.  Fantasie reist ver, voorbij grenzen, beperkingen en restricties. De spreekwoordelijke zware koffer is meer een last dan een lust. Maar toch lijkt het dat we graag gewicht dragen zelfs als het ons vertraagd. Ik heb altijd avontuur en levenservaring boven bezit en veiligheid verkozen. Ik koetser alles wat mij ten deel is gevallen. Zelfs de donkere kanten gaven waardevolle inzichten achteraf.. De enige dingen waar ik echt aan hecht zijn mij geliefden en mijn creativiteit. Maar ik ben ook een vrouw, dus als ik mijn vakantie koffer in pak, ongeacht de omvang, het zal tot de nok gevuld worden en zeker te zwaar zijn.  Maar verder, houdt ik er van om licht te reizen.

We all haven’t been around much past year. Covid kept us close to home. This could be the perfect opportunity to explore the unbeaten tracks of your home and minds. Imagination travels far, beyond any border, any limitation and any restriction. The proverbial heavy suitcase is more of a burden then it is a comfort. But still it seems we like to carry weight even if it slows us down. I always choose adventure and life experience over assets and securities. I Treasure everything life gave me. Even the dark sides gave insights that were of great value in hindsight. The only true things I cling to are my loved ones and my creativity. But, I am still a woman, so when I pack my actual holiday suitcase, no matter the size, it will be packed to the max and is often way too heavy.  Otherwise I like to travel light.

Would You Like Me Better If I Was A Selfie? Verbal 145

Hallo ik ben Cat, ook wel Copycat genoemd. Je komt mij veel tegen in het vergaarbakje van de vooruitgang.  Ik vier mijn eigenheid door zo veel mogelijk op anderen te lijken. Je hoeft niet diep te zoeken want ik beweeg me net onder de oppervlakte van zo’n beetje alles. Ik dank mijn ouders en in sommige gevallen de plastisch chirurg voor mijn geweldige verschijning. Ik ben pure poëzie gevangen in een naar perfectie strevend lichaam, gezicht en outfit van merk X. Als ik kon zingen zou ik mezelf bezingen, dit Godsgeschenk aan de wereld.. Fijn dat jullie er ook zijn; like, subscribe en koop dit product wat ik persoonlijk onderschrijf. Ik ben zo begaan met mezelf dat er geen tijd meer is om me druk te maken over dingen die er wel toe doen. In het licht van de eeuwigheid lijkt het misschien raar maar vandaag ben ik de bomb! Gelukkig is er verder niet zo veel aan de hand in de wereld. Alles is flex. Ik ben een fenomeen, de ambassadeur van leegte. Kijk, zo zie ik er uit als ik een kusmondje maak.

Would You Like Me Better If I Was A Selfie? Verbal 145

Hello I am Cat, Copycat for friends. You might find me in the receptacle of progression. I celebrate my uniqueness by looking and acting much the same as others.  No, you don’t have to search too deep, I am right here below the surface of almost anything. I thank my parents and on some occasions my plastic surgeon for my magnificent appearance. I am pure poetry captured in an, ever striving for perfection’ killer body, face and outfit of brand X.  If I could sing, I would praise me, a God given present to the world.  Good to have you around, please like, subscribe and buy this product, which I personally endorse. I am so involved with me; I simply do not have time left for things that actually do matter.  In the light of eternity this might look strange, but today I’m truly the bomb. Fortunately not much is happening in the world. It is all Hunky Dory. I am a phenomenon, the ambassador of emptiness. Look, this is me making a sexy duck face…………

Tomato Tomato (Black Milk)  146

Twee flesjes sap, acryl, schoolbordverf en transfer op een oud douche gordijn op een houten frame.

Mijn doel met deze twee flesjes was om een scherp contrast tussen zwart en wit te maken. En het te linken aan het ‘echte’ leven. 

Spontaan kwam de titel Black Milk in mij op. Toen ik wat ging zoeken om de originaliteit te checken kwam ik dit gedicht van Paul Celan als eerste tegen, het heet Dodenfuga (Todesfuge) alias Zwarte Melk, (Schwarze Milch). 

Het is een gedicht over de holocaust en de Joden vervolging. Hieronder een paar regels om te illustreren: (origineel in Duits)

“Black milk of daybreak we drink you at night 
we drink you at midday Death is a master aus Deutschland 
we drink you at evening and morning we drink and we drink 
this Death is ein Meister aus Deutschland his eye it is blue “

Dat komt wel binnen.

Ten tweede vond ik de song Black Milk van Massive Attack, wederom een paar regels; 

“You’re not my eater
I’m not your food”

En tot slot lip ik tegen underground Rapper,Curtis Eugene Cross alias; Black Milk, aan. Hieronder een regel uit zijn nummer ‘Could It Be’:

“I don’t represent no colors, I represent my lil’ sisters and brothers”

Deze 3 voorbeelden die ik vond hadden allen verschillende oorsprong en invalshoek. En niet direct of door elkaar geïnspireerd zeggen ze toch min of meer het zelfde; veracht of veroordeel mij niet op mijn voorkomen omdat het anders is dan het jouwe.

Of om nog een heel ander melk gerelateerd gedicht te quoten;

“No matter how black the cow, he still gives white milk” 

Conclusie; Wat ons onderscheid is niet de kleur van onze huid of onze achtergrond. In hoe we anderen behandelen schuilt onze menselijkheid.

Tomato, Tomato (Black Milk) verbal 146

My aim with these two bottles was to visualize a sharp contrast, black and white. And connect it to real-life issues.

Spontaneously the title Black Milk came to mind. When I did some research to check it’s originality I first stumbled on a poem by Paul Celan called Deathfugue (Todesfuge) alias Black Milk, (Schwarze Milch). 

It is a poem about the Holocaust and the persecution of Jews. A few lines below to illustrate this poem (The original is in German): 

“Black milk of daybreak we drink you at night 
we drink you at midday Death is a master aus Deutschland 
we drink you at evening and morning we drink and we drink 
this Death is ein Meister aus Deutschland his eye it is blue “

Heavy stuff.

Second I found this song by Massive Attack called Black Milk, again a few lines: 

“You’re not my eater
I’m not your food”

And finally I bumped into underground Rapper, Curtis Eugene Cross alias Black Milk. Below a line from his song ‘Could It Be’:

“I don’t represent no colours, I represent my lil’ sisters and brothers”

These 3 samples I could find about Black Milk are from different sources and angles.  Not directly inspired by or on each other, but maybe all holding the same message: do not loathe, or judge me, for my appearance or roots is different than yours.

Or to quote another poem in the milk sphere;

“No matter how black the cow, he still gives white milk” 

Conclusion, What separates us is not a skin colour or background. In how we treat others our humanity is determined.

Lifes Of Our Days verbal 147

Een gevonden plastic tas van ‘Lifestyle Home Collection’, bord verf, een handafdruk met rode inkt en zwarte plakletters op een houten frame.

Een incorrecte re-shuffle van Days Of Our Lives, de titel van een soapserie (1965) die ik nooit heb gezien  Maar met dank aan Joey Tribbiani (Matt Le Blanc) uit de Friends serie (90ties) waarin hij een acteur speelde die op zijn beurt Dr. Ramoray uit Days of Our Lives speelt, is het bij mij ergens blijven hangen. Ik heb mezelf toegestaan om het woord Lives In dit kunstwerkje, vrij te benaderen met het incorrecte meervoudige Lifes. Op de tas die ik gebruikte stond het woord Lifestyle en als een interventie heb ik de laatste 4 letters zwart gemaakt met het resultaat dat je nu ziet. Dat noemen ze roeien met de riemen die je hebt. Wat nu, als we het incorrecte en opgedraaide titel nu op een wat meer filosofische manier bekijken? Hoeveel levens blijven er over in onze dagen? De dagen zijn oneindig maar het leven er in neemt met het verstrijken ervan af…..

Lifes Of Our Days verbal 147

An incorrect re-shuffle of Days Of Our Lives,a title of a soap series (1965) I have never seen. Thanks to Joey Tribbiani (Matt Le Blanc), from the series Friends (90ties) where he played an actor who plays dr. Drake Ramoray in the Days Of our Lives series, it stayed hooked in my mind. I allowed myself a free approach to the word Lives. Lives became Lifes, the non-correct plural of Life, in my artwork. The bag I used spelled Lifestyle and as an intervention I blacked out the last 4 characters out resulting in lifes. Play the hand you’re dealt, they say. But what if we turn the reversed and incorrect title into a more philosophical direction. How many lives are remaining in our days? The days are infinite, but lives in it are diminishing as days go by……..

Against Better Judgement verbal 148

De dingen die we allemaal niet tegen beter weten doen! The better judgement, het betere weten is kennelijk de brave Hendrik naast het de sexy irrationaliteit. Maar rationaliteit bewees zich zijn eigen gelijk telkens weer. Again, again and again and again(st) better judgement.

The things we do against better judgement are countless. The better judgement is obviously the boring goody two shoes next tosexy irrationality. But rationality often proves itself right again, again, again and again(st) better judgement.

Pagina uit de krant over ‘fake news’ en virus waanzin, gevonden en geknipte tekst, geprinte like/dislike duim en witte acrylverf op een houten frame. 

Big Brother is geen mythe. Hij leeft en is onder ons. Sommigen zeggen dat het een buitenaards wezen is dat hongert naar informatie om naar zijn moeder planeet te sturen. Daar is natuurlijk geen bewijs van. Of wel….Hoe dan ook, hij ziet er zeker wel zo uit met zijn glazige blik. En serieus, hoeveel bewijs heb je echt nodig. 

Door ons is het data monster, Big Brother,  is erg succesvol. Wij, de goedgelovigen, voeren hem dagelijks met onze meest persoonlijke verhalen. Grote broer houdt van onze toewijding. Tot op het bot. Het maakt hem en onze achterdocht groter en groter totdat het op een dag in ons gezicht ontploft.  Dus mocht je je ooit afvragen waar de echte macht huist en wie de grootste invloed heeft?… Fijne dag nog.

Big Brother is not a myth. He is very much alive and amongst us. Some say he is an alien, hungry for information to send to his mother planet elsewhere. There is no proof of that. Or is there…

However, he most definitely looks like one, with his glassy gaze. And really, how much proof do we need.

The data monster, Big Brother is very successful with us. We, the gullible believers are feeding his hungry jaws daily with all our most personal affairs. The Brother loves our commitment. He loves it to the bone. It makes him and our suspicion grow bigger and bigger until it will finally blows up on us!

So if you ever wonder where the powers to be homes…and who is the most influential of all……….Have a nice day.

Life Of Brian verbal no 150

Witte plastic dopjes van melkkartonnen, zwarte metalen doppen van rode wijn flessen op witte foamboard in een houten frame. 

Het is al even geleden dat de Monty Python film Life Of Brian (1979) een coffee corner onderwerp was. Goeie films kunnen steeds opnieuw gezien worden. Life Of Brian is zo’n film. Ondanks het feit dat het Monty Python en dus Life Of Brian vooral te doen was om absurditeit en humor, draagt het ook een grote waarheid in zich. En dat is; dat mensen altijd op zoek zijn naar leiders, messiassen en profeten, goed of vals. Zoals Brian in de film, per ongeluk en tegen zijn wil wordt herkend als de zoon van God, zo claimen anderen dubieus leiderschap en worden desondanks toch ook vereerd. We zien de meest vreemde vormen van abject populistisch leiderschap beloont met aanbidding. Ik denk dat, dat komt door constante staat van verwarring in een verwarrende wereld.

Life Of Brian verbal no 150

It has been a while since the Monty Python film Life Of Brian (1979) was a coffee corner topic. Great films can be seen over and over again. Life of Brian is one of those films. Although Monty Python thus Life Of Brian was all about absurdity and laughs, it holds a great truth in it. That is; people always seek leaders, messiahs and prophets, good or false. As Brian in the film is, accidentally and against his own will, recognized as the Son of God, many others claim dubious leadership and get worshipped too? We see the strangest samples of abject and populist leadership rewarded with worship. I reckon this is a result of constant state of confusion in a confusing world.
